Nadaísmo (Nothing-ism) was one of Latin America’s boldest avant-garde movements. Active in Colombia from 1958 to 1964, it called for “a revolution in the form and content of the dominant spiritual order,” in the words of founder Gonzalo Arango. Drawing on Surrealism, Existentialism, Dada, and the Beats, Arango’s poetics responded to both Colombia’s conservative literary culture and its civil war, La Violencia.
NADAÍSMO: Gonzalo Arango brings Arango’s work into English for the first time, showcasing his irreverence, urgency, and radical belief in language. From the charged First Nadaist Manifesto to the lyrical “My Resurrection” and the surreal “Diary of a Nadaist,” this collection reveals a writer pushing against the limits of form and tradition.
In 1970, Arango declared he was leaving Nadaísmo behind—true to a movement that vowed “not to leave a faith intact.” Though many members drifted in different directions, its revolutionary spirit still resonates with new generations of writers, much like the Beats.
